Baby’s 1st Digital Thermometer
Congratulations on your purchase of a Safety 1st
Digital Thermometer. Please read the
instructions carefully to ensure accurate
temperatures and safe operation. When used
properly, this high quality product will give
you years of accurate, dependable service.
SAFETY INFORMATION:
High, prolonged fever requires medical attention especially for young children. Please contact your physician.
Do not allow children to take their temperatures unattended.
Read the enclosed instructions carefully to ensure accurate temperature readings. Temperature readings are
affected by many factors including exercise, drinking hot or cold beverages prior to taking a reading as well as technique.
Do not allow children to walk or run during temperature taking. The probe could present a hazard.
Oral, underarm, and rectal temperatures vary by approximately 0.9°F/0.5°C.
WHAT IS A “NORMAL” TEMPERATURE?:
Temperature readings vary in different individuals. A normal temperature refers to each individual’s average temperature while they
are well. Normal average temperatures range from 97°F/36.1°C to 100°F/37.7°C when taken orally. See “RECTAL USE” and
“UNDERARM (AXILLARY) USE” for the oral equivalent of a rectal or underarm reading.
HOW TO TAKE TEMPERATURE:
1. Select oral, underarm or rectal as your measurement site based on the individual requiring a temperature measurement.
2. Push the on-off button located beside the display window. The display will read: “188.8°F
M
This is a function check
indicating the unit is working properly.
If you choose to recall the last measured temperature, hold the on-off button down for 2 seconds, and the last temperature
will be displayed on the screen for two seconds. The thermometer will read L °F (or L °C) and begin measuring
temperature when exposed to body
heat.
3. The °F (or °C) symbol will continuously flash until completion of the temperature taking process. Please note that the “
indicates a low battery. An “ERR” message in the window indicates your unit is not functioning properly. Do not expect an
accurate temperature reading if this low battery indicator is present. Out-of-range indicator displays “L” when
measurement is lower than 90.0°F and “H” when higher than 109.9°F.
RECTAL USE:
Commonly used for babies, young children or when it is difficult to take an oral or underarm temperature.
Lubricate probe tip with a water-soluble lubricant or petroleum jelly.
Gently insert the probe tip no more than 1/2 inch (1.3) cm into the rectum. Do not force the tip into the rectum if
resistance is encountered. Please note the ring at the end of the probe helps ensure you don’t insert too far.
Reference over insertion gauge above.
Clean the thermometer as recommended above.
The peak temperature should be reached in approximately 40 seconds.
Read the digital display and subtract 0.9˚F/0.5˚C to obtain an oral equivalent temperature.
UNDERARM (AXILLARY) USE:
Wipe underarm with a dry towel.
Place probe tip in armpit and bring arm down against the body. The thermometer should
be pointing upward in the same direction as your body if possible.
The time required for an accurate underarm temperature may be 60 seconds or longer
depending on placement of the probe and closure of the arm against the body.
Read the digital display and add .9˚F/.5˚C to obtain an oral equivalent temperature.
ORAL USE: (For children 4 years and older)
Do not drink hot or cold fluids, exercise, or perform other activities that will raise or lower
temperature readings when compared to your normal, average temperature. The mouth
should remain closed up to 5 minutes before attempting a reading.
Place the probe tip well under the tongue, (See diagram) as indicated by the ““.
Instruct children not to bite down on the probe.
The peak temperature should be reached in approximately 60 seconds. Opening the mouth
could result in a longer time for a reading.
4. When peak temperature is reached, the °F (or °C) symbol will stop flashing.
5. Read and record the temperature and time for reference. The reading will automatically be stored in the memory.
6. Push the on-off button to turn the unit off. If you do not turn the unit off, it will shut off automatically in
approximately 10 minutes.
BATTERY INFORMATION:
When the “
” appears in the lower right of the display, the battery is exhausted. Dispose of the thermometer as the battery
is non-replaceable. Be aware of any local regulations concerning disposal of this product. The battery is well sealed inside
the thermometer to reduce the risk of being swallowed by children.
WARNING: KEEP BATTERY OUT OF CHILD’S REACH. SWALLOWING
BATTERY COULD BE FATAL. BATTERY SHOULD NOT BE CHARGED OR PLACED INTO
EXTREME HEAT AS IT MAY RUPTURE.
Measurement Range: 90.0°F to 109.9°F/32°C to 43.9°C.
Measurement Accuracy: 0.2°F/0.1°C between 96.0°F to 107.0°F/35.5°C to 42°C 35.5°C.
